The Pelvic Floor, Transverse Abdominals, Multifidus and the Gluteals. Muscles a lot of us don’t know about, or if we do, don’t use properly. They make up the “Deep Core”, essential for the healthy support of your spine and pelvis.
Acting like the stays on the mast of a sailing yacht to support it and to absorb and transfer the loads placed on it by forces from the sails. When the stays /(deep core muscles) are not working the mast /(spine) is stressed and will, at some stage, fail.
As important as they are, these muscles can be very lazy. Pain, joint dysfunctions, poor postures, adverse biomechanics and muscle imbalances have all been shown to inhibit their activity. Once inhibited other muscles less suited for the job step up to try and perform the lost function. Hip flexors, lats, erector spinae, hamstrings, piriformis and others become over-active, tighter, sorer, their trigger points can become active and refer pain, nerve pathways tracking along, past or through them become irritated and tense……and the loads on the spine are increased.
Relieving pain and restoring good function can become difficult unless all the issues associated with their development are both recognised and addressed.
A Muscle Balance and Functional Movement Screen is a good start to Moving, Feeling and Playing Better.
